Beginning in the mid-1990 Elkhorn Coal Co. began blasting off the tops of the ridges around McRoberts, a small mining community located on Chopping Branch in Letcher Co. The "overburden" was dumped down the side of the mountain towards the head of Choppin Branch. The ecology of the creek was destroyed forever, resulting in a silted, smelly steam, highly prone to flooding.
